History and Mission of Stowe Craft DesignAn Art Craft VisionOur mission is to bring art, craft and imagination into peoples' daily lives.
Susan's vision began to form back in 1978 and is now supported by a team of artist - designers, sales and support staff. They are here because they feel a passion for the products and services we provide. Why not get to know them a little by visiting our Staff page? HistoryIn 1978 Susan Bayer Fishman opened Shimmering Glass in Waterbury, Vermont. The shop began as a tiny stained glass studio in Susan's home. Working alone, Susan designed and fabricated stained glass windows and lamps and took care of her children. The shop gradually expanded into her living room with blown glass, Tiffany-style lamps, jewelry and kaleidoscopes.
By 1993 Susan was ready to expand. She moved her gallery 1/2 mile to Route 100. Her new 1800 square foot space space was located in the former Mousetrap Building. Her neighbors were Green Mountain Chocolates and Cabot Cheese and just 1/2 mile from Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream factory. She had 1 full time employeee and a part time assistant in the Stained Glass Studio.
In 1995, Stephen joined Susan and they purchased the Stowe Craft Gallery (established in 1967).The Stowe store is in Stowe village home of Stowe Mountain Resort ski area, Trapp Family Lodge and many fine dining, shopping, art and recreational activities.
Soon our 2 stores employed eight staff. Later that year, the galleries achieved national recognition being nominated as a top 100 gallery of American Craft.

In 1997 our Interior Design Center took shape. Stowe Craft always has always featured unique displays. Over the years, more and more customers were asking Susan to help them select, coordinate and place art and craft in their homes. In 1997, an interesting building became available and Stowe Craft Interior Design Center was opened. It is located at the end of the Stowe Craft parking area, on Rt 100, next to the Mobil gas station. To keep everything (somewhat) managable, the Shimmering Glass store on Route 100 was closed and moved to Stowe.
In 1999 we began a web site. At first it was a brochure - the barnboard background was taken from a picture of an old silo next to our home. Here is a snapshot of our original home page
Today, Stowe Craft continues to achieve both national and local Vermont honors for fun shopping, great service, and unique products.
We have been recognized as a "Family Friendly Business" by the Vermont Governor's Council. Complementary articles have appeared about us in the New York Times, London Mail, Home Accents, Yankee Magazine, and others.
We are active in our town supporting and promoting independent local businesses and craft artisans on both local and national levels.
