Vintage and Modern Styles CombineAll our modern industrial furniture designs are made using vintage materials. Yet, each piece is modern as well as vintage. Yes, all the materials are old. Most come direct from closed steel foundrys, forges and factories. The sources were once part of America's mighty steel industry. For many of the pieces, we even know which factory or forge they were salvaged from. We consider it modern industrial furniture.
It is not only recycled, each is a new design by Bill Kreider. The salvaged steel and wood is cleaned, cut, shaped and refinished for home use. Pattern Pieces in FurnitureOne of the unusual materials used in our Kreider industrial tables and mirrors are "pattern pieces." Pattern pieces are special leftover's from America's industrial past. In the industrial era there was a trade called a "pattern maker." This tradesman was different from all the others. He could not learn this trade- the pattern maker had to be born with a special skill and vision. He created pieces that were used to make green sand molds. These patterns were a reversed image of an item which did not yet exist. Molten steel was poured into the sand molds. This created the item the pattern maker had envisioned. The pattern pieces were usually saved so they could make another mold if needed. Foundry patterns are in many cases the last three-dimensional representations of the machines that once defined the steel mills. As we enter the 21st century, they are symbols recalling our mighty industrial past. Our forebears looked at the pre-industrial world of the 19th century America with a nostalgic and idealistic gaze. Now we look back at the era of industrialization with that same nostalgic eye. These patterns are symbols of the machinery of mass production from a time when steel communities were at the pinnacle of industrial achievement.
