The History of Light Switch Plates

The light switch was invented in in 1916 by Newton & Goldberg. The lever you move does not actually turn the power off and on. It actually stretches a spring until the tension is enough to make a quick, solid contact. So it is the spring which controls the power. Another interesting aspect of light switches is how they are aligned in different countries. In North America a light switch is on when it is up. In Australia, it the opposite. And in many earthquake prone areas like Japan, they are sideways!
Because they must meet strict regulations the light switches do not vary very much. If you want to assert your individuality, the switch plate cover is the easiest way.

How to Install Ceramic Plate Covers

Yes, they are unique and made by artists, but they are also made to fit wherever a standard switchplate cover fits. Each switch plate cover comes with nice looking, off-white nylon screws. All you need is a small screwdriver. Don't over tighten.

As far as care goes- use any non-abrasive cleaner. We find glass cleaner works fine.

One caution-the switchplates may be slightly larger than the typical platic cover. If you have to seperate covers with no spacing between them, they may not fit. Ask for the double or triple configurations.
